The rug has a smooth top layer so is designed for you to lay directly on. The cgear sand free rug is perfect for inside the tent camping picnicing and laying out on the beach. Ths particular model that i have is a 4 person rug and they have a 2 and or a 3 person rug as well. We just throw it in our beach cart and go.
