If your ceiling fan pull chain is broken because it was pulled out of the switch there s an easy way to fix it. These pull chains get pulled on daily and can be broken. Yet a broken ceiling fan pull chain is a common problem for many owners of ceiling fans. You will probably have to remove lower the light fixture section of the unit to get to the fan section.

Even during normal use the weak beaded metal pull chain can easily break with a moderate pull. Turn off the power remove the light bulb and unscrew the fixture from the electrical box. A few models do allow you to reattach the chain but you must access the switch before. Also the light switch itself may wear out or fail.

Disassemble the switch and reconnect the chain. Touch one voltage tester probe to the black wire and the other to the white wire. Open up the switch in the ceiling fan and remove the broken piece of chain. If the voltage indicator doesn t light up the power is off.

The switch will also need to be replaced if the chain will not pull down or if it broke off inside the fan housing. Disassemble the switch and reconnect the chain. Open up the switch in the ceiling fan and remove the broken piece of chain before replacing it with a longer one. Unfortunately the only practical way to resolve this issue is to replace the chain.
